How To Maintain Your Leather Coat

Purchasing a leather coat is great. However, it will not serve you for long if you do not take good care of it. You should therefore know how to maintain your leather coat in order to maximize its use. You should also bear in mind the fact that a good leather coat will hardly be cheap. Maintaining it well will ensure that your money does not seem to go down the drain.

You can stay stylish for a good number of seasons when you maintain your leather jacket properly, which includes how you put it on. You should know the measures that you need to take in order to maintain your costly garment.

The way you hang your leather coat will play a significant role in ensuring that it serves you well. You should use padded hangers that are fairly wide to avoid creating either creases or punctures.

Over the summer, it will be necessary to store your leather coat. There are appropriate ways of ensuring that it will survive to the next season without any damage. One of the things you should avoid is keeping it inside any kind of plastic bag, which will starve it of air. In case you have to store your leather coat in a bag, you should use one that is made of cloth, or other natural fabric.

Your closet should be dry without some traces of humidity. The environment should likewise be cool. When you would like to dry your coat, do not place it under direct sunlight but should instead let it air-dry so as not to develop mildew, which will also result from dampness.

There is another extreme. While you should avoid humid areas, the place should not on the other hand be too hot and dry. Otherwise your leather coat is likely to crack. In such environments, you need to condition the coat to keep it in a good state. You should apply the conditioner when your leather coat is almost dry so as to make it more flexible once more. When it has fully air dried, you should then give it a complete treatment.

Although there are many products that are made of silicon or wax, you should avoid them since they tend to block the way leather naturally 'breathes'. You should as well refrain from using home cleaners that are likely to cause more stains as they dry on the surface.

This does not mean that there are no products that you can use to maintain your leather coat. The trick is to try any product you would like to use on a small hidden portion of your coat. It usually suffices to clean your coat just once in a season.
